We are pleased to announce the availability of the following draft EUROCAE document prepared by EUROCAE WG-31 – Electromagnetic Hazards:
- ED-158A – “Guide for Certification of Aircraft Electrical/Electronic Systems for the Effects of Lightning“
This revision continues to incorporate guidance material consistent with European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) lightning protection certification regulations and equivalent Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations.
The document has been updated to support compliance with EASA Acceptable Means of Compliance AMC 20-136 “Aircraft Electrical and Electronic System Lightning Protection” and the equivalent FAA Advisory Circular AC 20-136. The guidance and organisation throughout this revision have also been aligned, where applicable, with the latest revision of the corresponding HIRF protection certification guidance, EUROCAE ED-107B / SAE ARP5583B, particularly for common topics addressed in Chapter 5 and Chapters 7 to 10.
A significant change introduced in this revision is the transfer of safety assessment guidance from Chapter 5 to EUROCAE ED-338 / SAE ARP8482, together with other related updates reflecting current certification practices.
WG-31 Electromagnetic Hazards is responsible for developing guidance supporting the certification of aircraft electrical and electronic systems against the effects of lightning.
It is recognised that this guidance will be used by aircraft manufacturers, equipment suppliers, certification authorities, design organisations, and other aviation stakeholders involved in demonstrating compliance with lightning protection requirements. The document provides recommendations and guidance to support a consistent and harmonised certification approach.
This Open Consultation draft is presented in SAE format and will be converted to EUROCAE ED format as part of the final editing process.
You are invited to review the proposed draft on the EUROCAE Workspace and complete the comment form. If you are a non-member of EUROCAE, please register here (and click on “Access only to Open Consultation”). Early replies are encouraged.
