We are pleased to announce the publication of ED-342 “Guidance on Using Simulation in Handling Qualities Certification of VTOL“.

The primary scope of WG-112 “Vertical Take Off and Landing (VTOL)” is to develop industry standards supporting the EASA Special Condition on VTOL aircraft as Acceptable Means of Compliance.

ED-342 provides a structured approach to using simulation as a means of compliance for VTOL handling qualities certification. It focuses on “Certification by Simulation/Analysis”, where flight simulations with the pilot in the loop can partially or fully replace traditional flight testing to demonstrate compliance.

The guidance supports compliance with relevant EASA Means of Compliance, including MOC 5 VTOL.2500(b), MOC VTOL 2135 and MOC VTOL 2145. It can also be applied beyond the European regulatory framework and aims to reduce the time, cost and risk associated with flight testing by enabling selected scenarios to be demonstrated through simulation.
