NATO’s New Study on Future Aeronautical Navigation Technologies

EUROCAE is pleased to share information on a new NATO initiative: the NIAG Study on Aeronautical Navigation – Future Technologies. This project, launched under the NATO Industrial Advisory Group (NIAG), aligns with our ongoing collaboration with NATO’s Armament & Aerospace Capabilities Directorate through our Technical Cooperation Arrangement.

Objective of the Study:

The study aims to explore future technologies that can provide precise, resilient, secure, and safe aeronautical navigation capabilities. These technologies will support aircraft, munitions, and other aerial systems across various operational scenarios, including peacetime, crisis situations, and potentially wartime.

With legacy ground-based navigation aids being phased out and GNSS-based systems proving vulnerable to spoofing and jamming, ensuring reliable and resilient aeronautical navigation is more critical than ever. This study will assess innovative solutions to maintain navigation capabilities, particularly in degraded visibility conditions, where disruptions could severely impact military security and civil aviation operations.

Kick-Off Meeting Details:

  • Date: 10-11 April 2025
  • Location: DEVERO Hotel, hosted by THALES Italy

EUROCAE members interested in contributing to this important study can contact Alain Vallée, EUROCAE Technical Programme Manager, for further details.
