New Publication: ED-300A "Guidance on conducting an AFHA and PASA for a VTOL using a generic example"

We are pleased to announce the publication of ED-300A “Guidance on conducting an AFHA and PASA for a VTOL using a generic example”.

WG-112 on VTOL shall develop the appropriate industry standards necessary as Acceptable Means of Compliance to support the EASA Special Condition on VTOL aircraft. This activity is part of the EUROCAE Technical Work Programme and will be performed as a Pilot Project for the EUROCAE Lean process.

ED-300A supersedes ED-300 ‘Guidance on Conducting an Aircraft Functional Hazard Assessment and Preliminary Aircraft Safety Assessment for a VTOL Using a Generic Example’ issued in October 2022. A VTOL example is needed to show how aircraft-level Failure Conditions and their associated requirements can be flown down to system level, specifically for the highly-integrated functions of a VTOL aircraft and the new flight phases and operational aspects that they introduce.

The purpose of revision A is to update ED-300 to cover guidance for a PASA as well. As compared with the previous version, the main change is: – Chapter 4 VTOL PASA (and supporting appendices) added. Chapter 4 VCA PASA capture the initial inputs which have been defined in order to start the PASA. This includes data from the AFHA and any other requirements, aircraft functions, initial operating conditions and proposed aircraft architecture. This is “initial” because more inputs and details are gathered during the course of the analysis, as and when needed. It is recommended to gather the “easily” available data, that is sufficient to get started with the analysis, i.e. do not delay the work because of one piece of detailed data is not yet available. Through the analysis, it will become self-evident when there is anything missing. Typically, in a real-world project, the system-level safety analysis would also have begun, and their FCs would normally be available early in the PASA process as a useful set of inputs. In this example, there is no system-level analysis available. Any assumptions made would be validated in a second iteration of the analysis when more inputs (such as system-level FCs) are available.
