Join WG-112 VTOL: Seeking Contributors to Shape the Future of Vertical Flight

SG-2 DP005 “Guidance for Identification and Mitigation of eMotor Fire Risks”.

EUROCAE WG-112 SG-2 Lift and Thrust is seeking industry support to develop DP005 “Guidance for Identification and Mitigation of eMotor Fire Risks”. This initiative is critical to ensuring safe operations and compliance with airworthiness regulations as the industry progresses toward sustainable electric propulsion.

Key objectives include:

  • Identifying ignition risks and failure conditions unique to eMotors.
  • Establishing best practices for design, operation, and maintenance to prevent fire ignition and propagation.
  • Providing guidance for regulatory compliance.
  • The scope covers eMotor systems (motor, control electronics, inverters) for both liquid- and air-cooled designs, explicitly excluding battery-related risks. A gap analysis of existing regulations will guide the creation of practical recommendations.

SG-5 DP005 “Guidance for the safe management of lithium-ion thermal runaway and other fires and their effects”.

EUROCAE WG-112 SG-5 Ground is seeking industry support to develop DP005 “Guidance for the Safe Management of Lithium-Ion Thermal Runaway and Fires at Vertiports and Aerodromes Serving eVTOL Aircraft”.

The document aims to:

  • Provide technical standards and guidance for safely managing fires and their effects at vertiports and aerodromes.
  • Support national aviation and safety authorities in developing regulatory frameworks for vertiport infrastructure.
  • Assist on- and off-vertiport fire services, as well as other emergency services, in managing eVTOL fires effectively.

SG-6 DP004 “VTOL Minimum Flight Instruments – Display of Parameter Trends and Limitations”.

EUROCAE WG-112 SG-6 Avionics is inviting experts to contribute to the development of DP004 “VTOL Minimum Flight Instruments – Display of Parameter Trends and Limitations”, building on the previous SG-6 DP002 “Minimum Flight Instruments”.

This new task expands on the original by addressing how flight instruments display critical parameter trends and performance limits to pilots. The aim is to enhance the communication of flight envelope constraints, ensuring safer and more efficient operations.
