Aviation Software Standards (2026-ATM-2)

Aviation Software Standards training

What is this training about?

Communication, Navigation, Surveillance and Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM) systems rely on software to deliver safe, reliable, and efficient air traffic operations. Ensuring the quality, integrity, and assurance of this software is therefore essential throughout its development lifecycle.

ED-109 CNS/ATM software standard, developed by EUROCAE, provides guidance for the design, development, verification, and qualification of software used in CNS/ATM systems.

This training provides a comprehensive introduction to the principles of ED-109 and explains how to apply its guidance throughout the software lifecycle. Participants will gain a clear understanding of software assurance concepts, applicable assurance levels, system safety principles, tool qualification through ED-215, and the integration of Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) software into compliant development processes.

Combining regulatory guidance with practical experience, the course helps participants understand both the objectives of the standard and its application within real-world CNS/ATM projects.

Why attend this training?

  • Gain a solid understanding of the ED-109 standard and its application to CNS/ATM software development.
  • Learn how to apply software assurance principles according to the applicable assurance level.
  • Understand the lifecycle processes, objectives, and compliance expectations defined by ED-109.
  • Discover how system safety, software assurance, tool qualification (ED-215), and COTS software integrate into compliant development activities.
  • Benefit from practical implementation experience shared by an industry expert.
  • Build the knowledge required to support software qualification and certification activities within ATM programmes.

Who should attend?

This course is intended for professionals involved in the development, integration, verification, or qualification of CNS/ATM software, including:

  • Software engineers
  • System engineers
  • Hardware engineers
  • Project managers
  • Software quality assurance specialists
  • Verification and validation engineers
  • Certification and compliance engineers

Participants should have a background in software engineering or ATM systems. No prior knowledge of ED-109 is required.

Course benefits and resources

Included documentation

Participants receive access to the following EUROCAE publications as part of the course:

These publications provide valuable reference material for CNS/ATM software development and software assurance activities.

Networking opportunities

Meet professionals from Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs), system suppliers, manufacturers, certification authorities, and engineering organisations. The course provides an excellent opportunity to exchange practical experience and discuss common implementation challenges.
