ED-352 | Considerations for Lightning Zoning of VTOL-Capable Aircraft

WG-112
IAS
August 2026

ED-352 defines lightning strike zones and provides guidelines for locating them on various types of Vertical Take-Off & Landing (VTOL)-capable aircraft, together with examples. It references the existing guidance on rotorcraft and fixed-wing aircraft zonings, and shows how to apply that to VTOLs.
Guidance for lightning zoning of aircraft is given in ED-91/ARP5414 Lightning Zoning. The purpose of this document is to apply this guidance to the unconventional shapes, designs and new operating characteristics of VTOL aircraft. This is accomplished by
using the principles of rotorcraft and fixed-wing aircraft, no new zoning principles are proposed in this document.
